Principles underpinning the game - the Greek Fire manifesto!

  • Simple rules to give fast game play
  • An element of story telling/role playing - city states to have a character.
  • The character of the states to be embedded in their geography and intrinsic values, rather than an artificial games mechanic.
  • As much of the games mechanic as possible to be embedded in the board, and the initial setup.
  • Clear 'ancient Greek' aesthetic to the board and pieces.
  • Defined, accurate historical starting point, from which anything can then happen.
  • Different victory conditions for different players with different objectives.
  • Capture the sense of a real 'pre-industrial' military campaign - build up, some minor skirmishes, ending in one climactic battle.
  • Standard rule and board conventions centred around ancient Greece - meaning that the game can be expanded to cover other Classical period wars in the Aegean, near East, Egypt and Italy.
